Campus Sexual Assault Safety Tips

It is important for students to equip themselves with information and safety tips to ensure that it will be an exciting and safe experience. According to Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR) 1 in 4 college women are the victims of sexual assault. PCAR statistics also reveal that 80% of campus rapes are committed by someone the victim knows. Due to these startling statistics it is important to understand rape is not always perpetrated by the stranger lurking in the bushes and rape can occur anywhere, even within the confines of a college campus. Rest assured there are ways you can reduce your risk of becoming a victim and enjoy the college experience.

Safety Tips on Campus:

¨ Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

¨ While walking around on campus, walk with confidence.

¨ Trust your instincts.

¨ Do not use short cuts.

¨ Walk in well lit areas.

¨ Use the buddy system: walk in groups of two or more.

¨ Use escort services provided by campus security.

¨ Familiarize yourself with emergency call boxes located on campus grounds.

¨ If you believe you are being followed go to a public place and contact campus security.

Safety Tips in Residence Halls:

¨ Get acquainted with the Resident Assistant (RA) on your floor.

¨ Have your keys ready when entering building and dorm room.

¨ Keep dorm room locked. Do not prop open dorm room doors.

¨ Notify RA or other residential life staff of suspicious individuals.

¨ Have emergency numbers, such as campus security, permanently posted by the telephone.

¨ Do not give others the code or keys to enter your building.

¨ Ask people you do not know well to wait outside for you.

¨ In a residence hall screaming can sound like horseplay. In an emergency be specific by yelling "Fire" or "Help" to get needed attention.

¨ When attending activities or parties use the buddy system and let someone know where you are going and when you will return.
